A neonatal unit is used to treat ill or premature babies after they are born. It is becoming increasingly common for babies to spend at least some time in the neonatal unit after they are born. In fact, one in nine babies born in the Indore will spend at least a few days in the space. There are a wide range of potential issues which could send a new-born baby to the neonatal facility, including:
- Infections
- Temporary Breathing Support
- Heart Rate Monitoring
- Other Minor Medical Conditions
In NICU we provide specialized care for the tiniest patient, newborn babies who need intensive medical attention. A pediatrician with additional training takes care of sick and premature babies. Specially trained health care professionals will be involved in the care of a baby. .I.e. Neonatologists (pediatrician with additional training) pediatric residents and nurses.
Babies may need to spend time in a NICU if:
- They are premature (born before 37 weeks gestation)
- There were complications during labour
- There are complications such as breathing problems, infections, birth defects or the baby needs surgery
- They have a low birth weight (less than 2.5 kg)
- they are a twin, Triplet or from other multiple births
